Water fetching with the locals in Ghana

One of our main concerns is always where we can fill up our jerry cans with water, particularly when bush camping for several days in a row. Typically we can fill them up at the campsites we stay at or at service stations. This time, we went local. And it was way more exciting. We pulled up to a village’s local water pump where there were several taps, one with a hose attached. Locals were filling up jerry cans themselves or large tin buckets which they’d get another person to help them lift up onto their head. Each time they did it some water would splash out onto their face or down their chest and they would burst out laughing and then get the other person to pour a little more water to top up their bucket before carrying it off into the distance.
We were waiting for our turn but the locals insisted we went first and kindly let us fill up all our jerry cans before them.
