Bazoule Crocodile Centre

Call me mad because I sat on top of two crocs in one day. Yes, that’s right, I sat on not one, but two crocs and even lifted one of their legs up in the air! Photo evidence below…

So why sit on a croc (or two) you may ask? Really I think it was because it seemed like a good idea at the time. And the locals swore it was ok. Apparently these crocs are sacred. One of the guys showing us around the centre (which has no fences) told us the story that the villagers used to have to walk for 10-15 kms to find water until one day two crocs turned up in their village. The crocs didn’t harm anyone so they began to trust them and followed them to a nearby place where they had walked off to. The locals dug there and found water and ever since crocs and humans have been living there in harmony. The locals now fetch water, swim in and just generally walk around the same pool of water as the crocs without incident. And now tourists also sit on the crocs it seems!

Now this is totally barbaric but our group bought three live chickens which you can feed to the crocs. They are either dangled off a string tied to a long stick or thrown in the croc’s general direction – the first method being the most barbaric. When watching these crocs jump up and snap at the poor chickens, it made me rethink why I chose to sit on them. Must remember never to attempt this again…
